An unpleasant emotion caused by you feeling a threat of danger, pain or harm is the dictionary definition, but which is it that prevents you from progressing?
You step in the gym around this time of year and you feel overwhelmed by the number of people you are surrounded by and begin to feel nervy about standing out because you feel unworthy, over weight and almost ashamed about where you are right now.
This is as a result of you not being in control of your emotions so let me explain more using the Chimp model which was created by Professor Steven Peters (2012)
Your brain is split into 3 sections; The human (you) where you are a consciously analysing being working with facts and truth, which makes deductions using logical thinking.
The Chimp – An independent thinking brain that isn’t under your control. By working with feelings and impressions, the information gained is then put together using emotional thinking.
The computer – A brain that is at the disposal of the human and the chimp to put information in for reference acting as a memory and also as automatic thinking. If the human or chip is asleep, the computer is programmed to take over the mind unless they run ahead with decisions and beliefs that the mind acts with.
Your probably thinking to yourself now how can i control this? The easiest way to answer this, is by identifying how the fear can be tackled and it starts with you putting steps in place to climb further towards your end goal.
So if you are the person previously mentioned, feeling overwhelmed in the gym, ask your self why you started in the first place and keep reminding yourself of that because to start is a massive step in it self and how did you feel when you actually set off to the gym? Excited right?
Naturally if you are unfamiliar with the gym or other training environment, there is going to be the what if question but what you need to remember is that is a process and it will take time and for each barrier you overcome, the better you will feel. The better you feel, the more motivated you become.
You get the picture, so now you need to ask yourself.
What is your vision?
What do you need to do to reach that vision?
What actions do you now need to take to make this a reality?
Whatever your fear, if you really want something you must surround yourself with the right people who are going to support your journey and distance yourself from the negative influences.
Remember that there is no silly questions, because those you do not ask are the silly ones
